A Bi-annual
Newsletter for the Descendants of the Couts Family #46
It is
the goal of this newsletter to create interest in and share the research for
the Couts (pronounced Koutz) and Allied Family
genealogy. It can only be written with
the cooperation of each family member.
We encourage each of you to send in your family group sheets and enter
data as far back as you can find. The
information that you find within its covers will be as “true” as we can
prove. We gladly accept articles,
photos, genealogy lines, and family stories. We plan to complete this edition
to Newsletter #50 and then, we will end the series.

It is wonderful to learn so much of the history of the Couts family. Do you have a copy the the small book abut JR Couts that was sponsored by the Citizens bank? I think it is called "A Man and his Monument" I do have one if you do not. Thank you for the effort that you put into keeping this story alive. |

My dad was from Kendalville, Indiana and his dad was Ora Couts. His father was Fred Couts, also from northern Indiana. My father Dale Sr., was raised by Fred and Minnie Couts of Brimfield, Indiana. According to my dad, Fred had nine brothers and sisters, although for some reason they never got together. I would love to find some of our long lost relatives:-) |

1. Jacob1 Youtsler died 18381.
He married (1) Mary Engleman. She died Unknown. He married (2) Sarah Freeman
Couts 02 Oct 1818 in Hardin Co. Ky.. She died Unknown.
Notes for Jacob Youtsler:
Entries relating to Jacob Youtsler
(Yutsler) are found on both Kentucky and Indiana.
Many sources are found tracing his whereabouts. From an unknown book there is a
story called "Five Years' Search of the Records" by Isaac N. Youtsler .
Because the story calls WIlliam Youtsler's
children " a large family of boys and
girls", I speculate that this article was written in the 1880's, when Wm.
Henry's children were young. Most of what Isaac wrote can be documented,
although he is mistaken in the beginning of his story when he says that Jacob Youtsler came over from Holland in 1682 with William Penn.
This Jacob lived from the mid 1700's to the 1820's as far as can be documented.
Another source is the obituary of William Henry Youtsler, grandson of Jacob. It is found in the Meade
County Messenger and is copied in the book, Meade Co. Cemeteries. It and
another source state that Jacob settled the "forgotten town of North Hampton
on Ohio" in Harrison Co. , IN. The reason North
Hampton is forgotton is that it was destroyed by
flood.
The number of children Jacob had is in question. Isaac says Jacob's children were William, John, Phoeby,
Kate and Susan. A pedigree I found in Corydon Library shows a daughter
Mary. I have notations of marriages for Phoebe (Spinks) and Kate (Catherine
Riley). One source says Phoebe's husband's name was Henry, but another says
Francis L. But both last names were Spinks. I also found a Henry and an Abraham
Youtlser that are the right age to be Jacob's
offspring.
Jacob himself appears in a marriage
record in 1818 to Sarah Couts in Hardin County, KY. This most probably
is a second marriage. The pedigree that mentions Mary Youtlser
says she is the daughter of Jacob Youtsler and Mary Engleman. Her birth is close to William's so Mary is likely
the mother of William also. From various copies of correspondence I have from
Ralph Stiles' collection, no one seems to have documentation on Mary Engleman.

Subject: More Circumstance . . .
Message: After I typed the foregoing message, I noticed something else . . .
Jacob Youtsler also was mentioned in the Harrison
County deeds. According to Jones' Hardin Marriages, "Yutsler,
Jacob and Mrs. Sarah Coutz" married, 1819. I
presume Sarah's first husband was Henry Couts, who died about 1815. His will is
in Jones' Hardin Wills (and mentions Wilson Boman and
Henry Boman--who really were Bomar
[the mistake was by the Hardin clerk, not by Jones]). Anyway, she was named
Sarah Freeman when she married Henry Couts. I might also point out that Philip
Freeman married Susanna Couts. (About 1833 Philip and Susanna went to the
Jackson Purchase part of Kentucky. They appeared to have several children.)

tie Johannes Detrich Kautz

Henry Couts married Sarah, daughter of Elisha Freeman,
pioneer settler in Hardin Co. Ky, Hennary (Henry)
Couts died in 1818, leaving widow, Sarah, no children. According to Judge Mather ,
Couts and Freeman were neighbors to Thomas Lincoln-father of Abraham.
Elisha Freeman, believed to have been one of the first white men
to visit Severns Valley and one of the earliest
settlers in the area of Freeman's Creek, made entry for 400 acres on December
20, 1782, on the watercourse Nole Linn Creek. A second entry was made on the same date for
400 acres on the same watercourse.
William Freeman was one of the earliest settlers in the Valley and must
have come in April of 1779. He has a
Creek and a Lake named for him.
Another Revolutionary War soldier who came to Hardin Co. was
Thomas Bailey, from Va, born
in 1759, died in 1825, and settled in the Mill Creek section of the
county. Thomas Bailey married Nancy
