From: "Richard Averett" <richard_averett@excite.com> When Iread the subject line I thought perhaps you had managed to read a Salt Lake paper.  My mother died here in our home on March 21st. It was a Sunday and that Wednesday we had services here. Our kids arrived from Michigan, Oregon, Virginia and Kansas. Each brought their entire families and most stayed several days. Each of our sons spoke as part of the funeral services.  We left Friday by car to Oakdale where another funeral service was held.  I gave the eulogy/life story and the Oakdale LDS Bishop was the other speaker.  We then drove to the cemetary where I dedicated the grave site.  Elaine and I came home slowly taking two days. I had no idea how expensive it was to die these days.  Mother's pre-paid plan only covered (because of the Salt Lake embalming, etc) part of the total. We moved her in with us when the Hospice people she needed more care. We bought a bigger place and a month after we moved in she passed away--while I was on the phone talking to a friend of hers. She went peacefully and I think happily--her last meal was ice cream!  Well, Elaien is working at the LDS translation department library. She is trying to organize the English section first and then the myriad of other languages.  I am working on two projects-one in Portugues and the other in Spanish.  Plus, I get to the administrivia-write letters and collect data for quarterly and yearly records of donated service. Thanks for the obit. I did not know of any Averetts (sp) living in that area.  Rich Averett

NAME:  Paul L Kouts  EMAIL: plkouts@GroupIVR.com  REFERRED BY: Search Engine COMMENTS: Hi John, I haven't made the reunions for many years. Are you still arranging them.  I laid-off research for a few years and have just started again. I'm finding some good stuff. We'll have to modify Kenneth's earlier work. I have found that Barnhardt and John Jacob were brothers and probably first  cousins once removed with Perry, Chauncy,  and Chambers. It also appears that there were two migrations. First Barnhardt and Salome  went to Ohio (possibly with her brother- John Berrier). John then went on to  Indiana before 1838 and Barnhard remained in Ohio until the early forties. The other group didn't go west until the fifties. I am trying to find if this is the trip that John's son Barney took on his way to Michigan. I'm still trying to identify my Great= Great-Grandfather's place in this mixed up family. Anyway, thanks for the web site and all of your work in the past.

Couts went from VA to Ohio in late 1700's.Apparently some went to NC at same time. You mention Indiana Couts but what about all the Ohio Couts ? Ind. Couts most likely from Ohio or NC. I know Couts went from Ohio to TN. Quite a few Couts in TN. now. My Dad had a cousin who went to Ca to see Couts in Ca in 1930's so I think Couts went from Ohio to Ca years before that.

My favorite aunt married his grandson.  He is well know in the San Diego area.  Both the San Diego Public Library and the San Diego County Library have copies of the book.  You can no doubt borrow it via an inter library loan through your local library.  Bob Geiberger Bob,I am much acquainted with Cave Johnson Couts, as I grew up in Long Beach CA, and had some cousins in San Diego, only one of whom has a blood connection  (supposed).   My three g-grandmother Nancy Couts Bird/Byrd, was said to be Cave's aunt.  In one of the few letters I have found online, his mother (Nancy) refers to his aunt Nancy, who I believe is my 3 g grandmother.    Since I sent that note to the list, I also found that the Huntington Library in San Marino CA, has a collection of 16,000 papers, mostly for Cave and his  son Cave, Jr. if I read the website correctly.  (See below).  The description  highlights the numerous pieces of correspondence with his Tennessee siblings  and family.  Specifically, I am looking for some discussion of his aunt Nancy Bird and her husband John Bird.  While I know the Couts history, I am trying to  research the Bird line and am at a dead end.    Below is what I found at the website.  I apologize that the part of the end I  could not paste in list form...It's all run together in one paragraph.  Has anyone on the list viewed the collection below at the Huntington Library? Couts a (Cave Couts b is his son) Cave J. Couts a was born near Springfield, Tennessee in November, 1821. He was recommended by Rep. James K. Polk to the United States Military Academy,  which he attended from 1838 to 1843. For four years Couts served at posts in  Louisiana and what is now Oklahoma, during which time he rose from second lieutenant of Riflemen to first lieutenant of First Dragoons. In November, 1847, in the closing moments of the war with Mexico, Couts was sent to Monterrey, Mex., too late to take part in any real confrontation with  the enemy. In June, 1848, after uneventful months of occupation duty, Couts' company began a six-month march to California from Monterrey. Due to incompetent command the march proved to be one of foolish hardship and privation, and  Couts kept a journal chronicling the outrages to which his proud company was submitted. Upon reaching California Couts was stationed at Los Angeles and San Diego for several months, and in late 1849 he headed up the escort for the U.S.  Boundary Commission survey team, which was mapping the U.S. border from San Diego to the Colorado-Gila River junction.  In 1851, after several more months of occupation duty in San Diego, Couts  married Isidora Bandini, daughter of the very prominent Californiano, Juan  Bandini. Shortly thereafter, in October of that year, Couts resigned his Army  commission and took over the operation of the San Diego County ranch Guajome, a wedding present of the bride's brother-in-law, Abel Stearns. In late 1851 Couts was second-in-command of the volunteer force which brought  under control the San Diego County Indian uprising known as the Garra Revolt.  In January, 1852 he was the presiding judge at the court martial of the man who instigated that revolt, Antonio Garra. Couts was further involved with San  Diego Indians as sub-agent for the county from 1853 to 1855.As Couts turned his attentions toward setting up his ranch he put his primary efforts into raising cattle, with the help of Abel Stearns. He proved quite  successful as a cattleman, and acquired great wealth. He was later able to add  the nearby ranches Buena Vista and Los Vallecitos de San Marcos to his land  holdings. He was also a very well-respected man throughout California. A staunch  Democrat, he was very active in county and state politics. He was several  times a delegate to the state Democratic Convention, and he held numerous county  positions, including that of Justice of the Peace (which he held from 1853 to 1863).  With the passing of the No-fence Law in Sacramento in 1872 Couts received a  financial blow from which he never recovered. California laws had always  favored the rancher, with his open-range method of cattle raising. This new law,  which Couts fought desperately, placed on the cattleman the responsibility for  any damage to farmers' crops caused by his free-roaming cattle. Thus, rather  than farmers having to enclose their fields, ranchers had to enclose their  cattle, or sell. Couts was forced to sell his herds at ruinous prices. Two years later, in June, 1874, Couts died of aneurism at San Diego. An interesting sidelight to Couts' papers is the Civil War material to be found in the correspondence he maintained with his brothers and sisters in  Tennessee. These letters give an informative view of the rigors of war in that  state. Couts, as one might suspect, was a strong Confederate supporter.

Stuff Hi Janet, Reference Barbara Evans' recent email subject as above.  I am a descendent of William Couts, your Nancy's brother.  I show her marrying John Bird in 1814 in Robertson Co., TN. and dying in Dade Co., Mo.   I don't have any additional Byrd info that I'm aware of.  I visited Huntington Lib a couple of years ago and donated two letters circa 1835 and 1840 that had been found folded in my father's bible.  They were from William Couts and Nancy Johnson Couts (Cave's parents) to him (1) while in West Point, and (2) while on military duty in Arkansas.  They gave delightful glimpses into their family lives.  (Cave seems to have been serious about an Indian girl in Arkansas and wanted to bring her home to meet the family.)  I felt that the Library would take better care and be able to better share the information. It seems we are lucky that Cave was an excellent correspondent and somewhat of a packrat and saved lots of documents and correspondence.  At the library, there was a person assigned as conservator and the library folks were easy to deal with.  At that time they permitted controlled handling of the records / correspondence. Although I live in Virginia, I've visited San Diego Co., and Rancho Guajome.  Let me know if I can help....Lynn

Subject: Miss Ohio need help From: Janelle Couts

Dear friends, As most of you know by now, I have had the opportunity to be Miss Ohio 2003. It has been a really busy year, but I have had a great time and I have been able to travel and share my platform with a lot of people. I have given my year of service to my platform issue which involves music and the elderly population. Right now I have a fundraisor CD on the miss ohio website, www.missohio.org. The funds are going to charity, and in order to reach my donation goal of selling a thousand CDs, I need your help. If any of you have experienced the Alzheimer's disease like my family has, or if you have a special place in your life for music, please just check out the website. I would really appreciate anything that you could do to help me make my year finish with a bang!!! Thanks, Janelle Couts Miss Ohio 2003 Janelle, Congratulations on your successful reign. The first step is to gather any information that you have about your immediate family-dates, places, spouses' maiden names etc. Put that info into records, census (1930 and back) tax, deeds, death cert. wills, voting records.   Find a chart you like, maybe off of ancestor.com. Then, check our web page for family lines. Just do one line at a time, but gather as much info about the other lines as you can.  Most of the info is online now  Ancestry.com; genealogy.com This info is like mine, just what other people have put into it, not proven facts. Anne died in 1894 in Greene Co, PA, and is buried in Springhill Twp., in Windy Gap Cemetery.  Could not find Peter's death info. I'm researching the Flowers family and wonder if this Anne Coutz could be the daughter of  the Elisabeth Flowers who is living with the Coutz family in this census.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks. Subject: Can you add a query to your newsletter/webpage for me? From: P Drummond Jenkins

I am trying to get more information on Peter Couts. One of his sons' was Leon(itis) H(amilton?) Coutz who was my 2xgreat grandfather. Leon apparently was born in 1849.Peter's wife was Martha Ann(ie) (Flowers) Couts/Coutz, she was born somewhere in Pennsylvania, her mother, Elizabeth Flowers was born in 1776 in Maryland. (Martha) Annie Coutz died December 10 1894 in Springhill township in Greene County, PA.
My currant theory is that Peter's father was a Michael Couts (also in Greene County, PA). Michael appears in the 1800 Pennsylvania census, the only Couts in Greene County. Any confirmation or other information is welcomed and appreciated. Thank you, Patty (Drummond) Jenkins Subject: [COUTS] Couts From: "Dean & Debbie Gallino" <dgallino@QuixNet.net> I am looking for Grace Winnie Couts - Born in Missouri about 1887/1888.  She married Hebert Henry Hill. Subject: RE: Nancy Reed From: sandy ricketts Hi Barbara, Thanks for your quick response. The e-mails mentioned Armer and George Reed. I have found quite a bit about them in Warrick Co. and have written several people researching that line. They feel that Abraham might be George Reed's son because  the birthdate would fit along with coming from VA and settling in Warrick. However, none of them have ever come across the name Abraham in their research. I think I originally mentioned that Abraham was my ggg grandfather. Actually, I forgot to add another g. I may have some info. for you on the Couts, though. I have some research I obtained several years ago done by June Kifer Ricketts. She did it the old fashioned way and even had her own microfilm machine at home. She has typed notes, handwritten notes, etc. that are fairly complete. I'll list what she has and would be glad to send you a copy of her actual typed and handwritten notes if you want them. She included this information as Mary Ann Couts Gwaltney married James Madison Ricketts, Sr. who was my ggg grandfather. This was a second marriage for both of them and took place in Warrick County, IN on Dec. 5, 1864.According to June, Mary Ann Coutz (Couts) first married Aaron T. Gwaltney after 1835. She was born 5 Oct 1830 in Warrick Co. and Aaron was born 22 Dec 1828 in unknown location. They had two children: Mary (no other info.) who married Unk. Brown. Their other child was John born abt. 1855 and died after 1910. This An obit I have from the Boonville Enquirer (Stanley News) dated May 1, 1903 says: Mrs. Mary Ann Ricketts was born Oct. 5, 1830 and departed this life April 21, 1903, age 73 years 6 months and 6 days. She was married at an early age to Mr. Gwaltney and to this union was born two children, one daughter Mrs. Mary Brown of Petersburg and son John of here. Her husband preceded her to the grave. In 1863 she was married to James. R. (should be M.) Ricketts and to this union was born four children three daughters and one son, nix: Mrs. Joe Madden, Mrs. Arthur Parke, and Louis Ricketts of near here: her husband and one daughter preceded her to the grave several years. She belonged to the Regular Baptist Church and was a faithful member for 35 years. Her remains were laid to rest in the Providence Cemetery April 22nd, Rev. Oliphant officiating. We extend our sympathy to the children in the loss of a loving mother. (Providence Cemetery is in Gibson Co., IN).

John Ricketts is listed as a widower, but he wasn't. I think his wife had had enough and left with the kids and was living in Gibson Co., IN).

Unfortunately, part of the handwritten notes on the ______ Gwaltney Family Burial Lot are not that clear. It says the notes were taken April 4, 1942 by Thomas J. Dillingham and this is the list of the dead:

Aaron T. (?) Gwaltney    born 22 Dec 1828   died 11 June 1861

Ann E. Gwaltney            born 14 Mar 1856    died 16 Dec 1861   dau. of A. & M. Gwaltney

More of the notes go on to say: This family burial plot is located in a little grove on the form of Alvah Ricketts, the son of Lewis Ricketts. The mother of Lewis Ricketts was the widow of Aaron T. Gwaltney. The two graves are enclosed by a small rail pen four rails high.

In different handwriting which I believe is June's handwriting says:

Remarks: Aaron Gwaltney came to Gibson Co. in 1825. Farmer lived near Ft. Branch. Wife Phelia Scott came to Gibson Co. in 1827 died 1-31-1850. 2nd wife Nancy Taylor came to Gibson Co. from Vanderburgh Co. in 1853.

Abraham Reed's grandchild, Sarah Frances Osborne, married John C. Ricketts who was the one who was in and out of a mental hospital. I don't know if the Nancy Reed I originally asked you about was ever married. Abraham's first wife died and he married 2nd Nancy Caroline Archer. The obit for this Nancy Caroline Archer Reed was written by a Nancy Caroline Reed. The obit for her is very long but it mentions she was survived by two stepdaughters. One would have definitely been Abraham Reed's daughter  named Matilda (my ggg grandmother) and I'm thinking the 2nd one might have been this Nancy Reed.

Hope my info. has been of some help to you on the Couts / Gwaltney line. If you think I have anything else you might want, just let me know. Sandy

From: "Tei A. Gordon" <tagordon@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: Davidson Co TN Gordons  Happy New Year.  My apologies for the delay in replying to you.  My flight
back to Tokyo from Oregon was cancelled (due to snow) so I rerouted my return and spent a few days in Hawaii. I have reviewed the allied family names and entries you forwarded me, but am  yet unable to make a connection. During the late 1700s, I have found several Gordons scattered throughout Tennessee and I cannot tell how or if they were related.  I do know that there were some in Greene Co., Washington Co., White Co., Bedford Co. and  Davidson Co., but it seems that I will have to travel to the archives in TN to check records firsthand.  A big curiosity is the name Capt. John Gordon that keeps popping up, even in your entries.  Do you know anymore about him?

I am limited to using the internet for research, since I am based in Tokyo  and I believe that what is on the internet represents probably 1% of the information that is available in the archives and remains to be digitized. Anyhow, as I sift through what I can get my hands on, I will be sure to keep you informed. Just out of curiosity, what is your interest in the Gordons?  Are you related to any of them?  Best regards, Tei A. Gordon

From: "Evans" <bevans@syix.com> To: "Tei A. Gordon" <tagordon@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Davidson Co TN Gordons  Capt. Gordon was supposed to by this young, dashing Indian fighter, who was a hero in the Rev. War and saved the settlers.  From what I have found, he survived the wilderness, married, and moved his family to south central TN. Then, all track of him disappeared. My connection to the Gordons is that our family name Couts is so hard to find, I research lines who married into our line.  I have one sister to my 5xgrandfather who was mentioned in a will and would perhaps tie more evidence together.  She supposively married a Gordon around 1790.  Both disappear about that time. I empathize with your having to research allied families.  I have been relegated to doing the same as well as resorting to DNA testing. I will be sure to keep my eyes pealed for any Couts in my research as well. There was a John Gordon living on the Duck River in Warren Co. and he appeared there around 1790s with his wife.  Are you familiar with this John Gordon? Mahalo, Tei

Hello, I'm searching for the spouse of Margaret Couts, Davidson/Robertson County TN, circa 1785-1813.  In Goodspeed of Davidson, it states that she might have married a Gordon.  Margaret ties together several pieces of evidence in our line, but the mystery lady disappeared with money waiting for her in her uncle's will.. Can you help??? The time and places are right for circumstantial placement with Capt. John Gordon, but I haven't gotten  farther in my research, yet. Did Capt. John have another wife or girlfriend, at some time, by the name of Margaret Couts?  Does anyone know of a Thomas Gordon, fur trapper and if he had a wife? Our Margaret was supposed to have married a Gordon around 1792.  She disappear about that time 1792, married with later child, Susannah Couts-as it was listed in the will. I appreciate any help possible...Thanks, Barb

Couts/Coats I'm researching Coats in TN, Robertson County, 1790s...there is a Couts in Robertson County TN, the name in Court records is spelled Coats, but in land and probate records it's spelled Couts...both a John and William Couts are  there in the late 1700s and early 1800s...William Couts in the probate  records has a wife named  Nancy...my Rev William Coats has a wife named  Nancy, but he died in Callaway County MO in 1836, so he has been confused  with this William Couts of Robertson County TN... In the land record index for Robertson County TN the name is spelled Couts  and Coats, there is a William Coats who sells land to a John Baker of the  same county...my Rev William Coats married Nancy Baker, but in the land records themselves the name is spelled only Couts, these are the transcribed  WPA land records, but the index is the original index...both John and  William Couts in the land records, I believe have land near each other in  Robertson County TN and share a common adjoining owner, a Thomson or  Thompson... So, I'm trying to determine if this John and William Couts is really a Couts or Coats For a look at these records go here: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4292268607 Thanks... Couts/Coats Hi Charlotte, I have no proof of a William Couts, although the records reflect the spelling and our COUTS family line is filled with Williams. The John Couts in the 1790 of Robertson County would have been ours, brother to my Chrisley d.1792, and the ones who supposively had a brother William. Barb Couts Evans Coutsfamily.com

Carolyn, likewise, I would invite you to join our DNA project...Coate, Coates, Coats, in early Welsh Quaker records it is reported that the name Coates, Coate, Coats was also spelled Coots/Cootes...there is a John and James Coots I believe in Rowan County NC, Cootes/Coats in Davidson County TN  and my Baker family is out of Stokes County NC which is near Rockingham and which also contains a Richard Coats, I believe it is...he's in Rockingham that is...Charlotte http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar

From: "Charlotte Coats" <coats@hotmail.com> To: <COUTS-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [COUTS] - ROLL CALL!! Couts/Coats Yes, Newberry County SC...he is suppose to be the son of William Coats of Kings Creek who died in Camden District SC...in fact we're pretty sure of that...that name doesn't show up anywhere else...:)Anyway...my Rev William Coats was suppose to be his brother (Barton's) and Wilson Coats in Bedford County TN was suppose to be their brother as well...but our DNA project has put quite a bit of the old research into doubt...in the DNA project, my Rev William Coats matched two other lines that had been rejected as related to him in earlier research...I have documentation for my Rev William Coats wife Nancy Baker and her father Sylvester Baker of Smith County TN/Warren County TN/Wilson County TN back to 1802 to the Brush Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Smith County TN...but prior to that becomes a huge haze...:)There was also another Nancy Baker, 1840 time period in Rowan County NC I  think it was, that married in that county...but for my Rev William Coats and Nancy Baker, marriage date about 1792, I can't find anything on them prior to 1802...that's why so many people had connected the William Couts in Robertson County TN, partly because his wife's name was Nancy and because I'm sure the name was spelled Coats in some of the records and because he was in that area where Barton Coats was....whether that William Couts is a Coats, I don't know...but because the later probate records spell it Couts, I'm inclined to think that is a Couts, but certainly not my William Coats of  Smith County TN...In fact, my Rev William Coats and Nancy Baker were married in about 1792, or he could have had a first wife we don't know about, because in 1792 her father and family were in Stokes County NC until about 1802/04, I think they had one son born in Wayne County KY in 1804...ton of kids for my Baker family, his second wife was Ann, she's found in the Callaway County MO land records and his probate file same county, can't find a record of his first wife Experience, who was suppose to be the mother of my Nancy Baker...anyway, Sylvester was in Rowan County NC to about 1784, then Stokes county NC till about 1802/04, then Wayne County KY for just a year or two...then he says on to Davidson County TN, but he's in the Smith County and Warren County TN land records...anyway, I can't place Rev William Coats anywhere near Nancy's family in 1792...which makes me think, he was either married prior to his marriage to her or he didn't get to TN until later and was somewhere in NC prior to his marriage with her, her family was never in SC...I can't find a marriage record for them in Rowan or Stokes County NC or Wilkes County NC...

The Richard Coats I mentioned before out of Rockingham NC, matched a different group of Coats in our DNA project, I was indeed hoping he would match my line...sure helps give you some clues...:)  anyway, that Richard Coats came from Halifax County VA to Rockingham NC, his father we believe was also named William....and there was another group of Coats early on in Halifax County TN...but not only are you looking for your ancestor line, but you have to decided whether the name viation is what it is in the records and not something else...:) It has indeed become an overwhelming task...but I know there is a William,  James and John early on in his life...all of our lines that match in the DNA have a James, John or William as first names...:)  so could be his father was named John Coats and his father named James Coats...parentage for my Rev William Coats that would be...So the search goes on...:) Char

Dietrich is found living with Henry until 1795. Then, Henry sells the property and moves to Elizabethtown, Hardin County, KY. Henry's will ties him to Chrisley. Chrisley is tied to John by way of a headstone.  Chrisley dies in 1792. John lives a long and prosperous life, in Robertson County TN. basically following in his supposed father's career footsteps.
